Challenge Fulfilled!!!
March 19, 2008
Challenge Fulfilled!!! March 8, 2008 was International Women’s Day and a day Anastasia and I will always remember. It was the day we held our first ever fundraiser! It was a pancake breakfast. All proceeds went to the Family Resource Centre of West Hants in our community. Over the years Anastasia and I have done our fair share of volunteering for fundraisers—whether it be at our children’s school, our church or other community events—but we had never coordinated one ourselves before. Well, it was a blast; we had so much fun doing it. From the location and donations to the wonderful response from our community, everything seems to fall into place. So we know we where on the right path. Not once did we think “we can’t do this,” it was always “what can we do to make this bigger, better, a success?” It kind of became a game “how can we fill the gift basket more and where can we advertise on a zero budget?” We got our creative thinking caps on and got it done. Each time we headed out, whether it be asking for donations of food items or goodies to put in the gift basket, we were always received with positive energy and open arms. It was very empowering to know, big or small, we were making a difference. With location secured and menu planned it was time to recruit volunteers…and did we ever recruit! First aboard to volunteer their time on this special day was the Honourable Scott Brison M.P. and MLA Chuck Porter. Next, Mayor Anna Allen and Paula Lunn were more than happy to come flip pancakes. Then came Kevin Bottaro 1450 CFAB and MaryLou Bennett, Kim Chamber, Lisa Henniger and Jeff Kelly of the Family Resource Centre decided who all decided to lend a helping hand. And of course Harry Pemberton, Jeff Spencer and Kolby LeFresne who signed on to be our front line - handling the tickets. We were set. Then on Wednesday March 3, during an interview with Eastlink Cable, we received an e-mail from Scott Brison’s office saying that Dr. Janine Krieber, Stéphane Dion's wife, would be accompanying Scott Brison to help flip pancakes. Well you can only imagine the shock and squeals that echoed off the walls that night! What a thrill for our pancake breakfast to attract this kind of attention. We had to pinch ourselves from time to time, but not too, hard we did not want to bruise our flipping arm. Friday night the Windsor Legion (our location) allowed us to go in and set up. Saturday morning with AC/DC blaring we started making pancakes…and make pancakes…and make pancakes. It was so busy at one point that the pancake lovers where lined right out the door. Just about that time, the media arrived wanting pictures and a quick chat. It was so busy but exciting all at the same time. At one point during a picture with spatula in hand, camera focused on everyone smiling, someone snagged the prop: the pancake. I guess we were running low! Well we all burst into laughter and simply poured more batter on the griddle. The day was filled with fun events, laughter, good spirits and positive people. Thank you to all that joined us for pancakes and special thanks to the many volunteers who helped on this awesome day. Thanks to Niki Toomey and Dave Bannerman for their help prior too. Anastasia and I have headed to our think tank: Tim Horton’s, tossing ideas around for next year already. Any suggestions??? Final Note As 2008 comes in and everyone has made their New Year’s resolutions, here is hoping that when making our changes we have not forgotten to look into our hearts to be sure that our decisions match our true heart’s desires! 2008 is like a clean slate!!!!
Cheers, Jacqui and Anastasia
