Lately we have been discussing how important and difficult it is to remain true to what is right for yourself. As most women we have a strong desire to please others before ourselves. So it is very tempting to give into the wills of others, ie. friends, family, co-workers even strangers. Something we neglect to do is shut off all our distractions and look within ourselves, then ask ourselves "why and what". Why are we doing what we are doing and what is it we truly want for our lives. But if you can do this and remain true to yourself it is incredibly empowering and a very addictive feeling that you want to continue.

First off..what a great website!It is amazing when we step outside of ourselves what unexpected, wonderful things can happen.It is also amazing what we woman are capable of doing when left to our own devices. I am at a turning point in my own life and this site was just'calling out' to me. I have three grown children, the youngest finishing up University. I went through the empty nest syndrome(Do we really have that many tears in our bodies??LOL) Then went through it again LOL.Now I am a Grandmother..another wonderful experience. The problem ,if I may quote Cathy Bates in Fried Green Tomatoes is " I am too old to be young and too young to be old".I want to change careers and made a gusto start with this ,beginning taking on-line courses..but I do not have an ounce of confidence in myself.Everyone coming out of High School and University seem so confident , take charge..and have GREAT memories LOL. I do not have a friend since we moved to the Valley 3 years ago .My friends are all over the country.I am in a rut, I suppose, and life is swiftly running by me. My daughter tries to give me the Royal kick .But i must do this for myself..my choices.I have spent too long pleasing others and not being true to myself. I love to write, as you can tell by this longwinded post. So,I started putting these thoughts down on paper(errr. Microsoft word) When I get feeling down on myself, I read what I wrote and put myself in someone else's shoes wondering "What advice I would give that person if they had said the same thing".Any other babyboomers out there?
When I read your message it felt like I was reading my story, when it came to the school part. Lorie I went back to school in my 40's,scared and not sure I was capable. I had always believe I was not academically smart. Well to my pleasent surprise I am very intelligent. It was the best year of my life and it opened a flood gate,I could not get enough knowledge. As a mature student we bring many things to the table. First of all we want to be there and in most cases we have made sacrifices to be there also never forget we have tons of life experiences which serves us well. It is important for us to follow our hearts desire,it usually leads us in the right direction. I say congratulations Lorie, keep up the great work.
Lorie: I hope you have made a change in your life. I was early fifties when I went back to school. I discovered that I was intelligent and had something to contribute. I went to Community College with three quarters of the students coming straight from high school. But the four mature students got along just great with the rest of the class. Try something new it is amazing how wonderful it can turn out. This turned out to be one of the best times of my life.
I was newly divorced when I decided to go back to school in my late 30's. I faced a lot of challenges during those 4 years, including becoming a grandmother twice, but I wouldn't have changed anything! It was well worth the schedule juggling, frantic racing to get to class on time and constantly budgeting! My new motto is is that you are never too old to start over or learn new things!
I too am facing some monumental life changes - my husband of 24 years has recently left me and our four children. I am terrified to think of tomorrow - my children have shown an admirable courage and fortitude thru out this ordeal. For myself - I feel that I lost myself, my very identity over the last 24 years. This man whom I loved and stood by - upon whom my very identity seemed connected to - has become a stranger to me. I often think that had he died it may have been some how easier to bear the pain. This betrayal is so diffiuclt. It has been so hard - and I'm sure things will be more painful before it's finished. MM
Hi: I went back to NSCC when I was 55 and it was a very rewarding experience. I was nervous and a bit afraid at first; most of the students were very young; but I was so happy to find out that age didn't matter to most and I fit in really well and I did very well in the program. You have to look inward and you will find the strength for anything.
I have realized that age is just a number and not to let it hold me back from what I want to do. Most people are very kind and are willing to help. Go for it; you will be glad you did; don't sit around thinking about it; just do it. You will be surprised at the courage and confidence you have within.

I learned something yesterday from my 19 year old son. He has taught me many lessons and is very wise for his age. He said "Mom, truth is your friend, denial is your enemy". This simple statement was like a slap in the face for me but it was the absolute truth that pertained to my life. After the end of almost 20 years of marriage and lots of life changes for me, my 19 year old son has come to live with me to attend college in Toronto and I am so blessed to have him here.
